Strong receives award recognizing teaching excellence at William & Mary School of Business
Professor John S. Strong has received the second annual McGlothlin Faculty Teaching Award, which recognizes innovation and excellence in instruction at William & Mary’s Raymond A. Mason School of Business.
Strong is the CSX Professor of Finance and Economics at the Mason School, where he has taught since 1985. He was an integral part of establishing the Boehly Center for Excellence in Finance and also helped launch the center’s Singapore study abroad program.
The McGlothlin Award is one of the most prestigious honors at the Mason School and William & Mary. Faculty members are nominated by their peers, and winners are chosen by a selection committee based on several criteria, including but not limited to:
- A willingness to create and develop innovative new courses, programs and initiatives
- A commitment to and demonstrated engagement of students in and out of the classroom
- Participation and leadership in student-focused programs
“John is a role model and mentor to the junior faculty in the classroom as well as an avid supporter of curriculum innovation,” said Julie Agnew, Associate Professor of Finance and Economics and former Faculty Director of the Boehly Center. “He devotes countless hours to service in leadership roles and sets a high bar for teaching excellence.”
Lawrence J. Ring, the Chancellor Professor of Business Administration, said: “John encourages active learning on the part of his students and insists on an interactive classroom where there is critical discussion between and him and the students and among the students. John is the best teacher in the Mason School and has been the best for the last 30 years.”
In addition to his roles with the Boehly Center, Strong developed and taught the inaugural joint JD/MBA Merger and Acquisition Simulation in January. Graduate students from the Law and Business Schools participated in the four-day immersion course, which taught students how to initiate and complete business deals.
Strong earned his Master’s and Doctoral Degrees from Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass., where he also has served as a visiting professor and a research fellow. He has been a Fulbright Scholar and a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellow.
