Biography

John S. Strong is CSX Professor of Finance and Economics at William & Mary (USA). He received his master's and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard, where he also has been a visiting professor and a research fellow. He has been a Fulbright Scholar and a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellow.

He is an eighteen-time winner of the William & Mary MBA and Executive MBA Outstanding Professor Award, and received the Thomas Jefferson Teaching Award at the College’s Tercentenary Celebration in 1993.

Strong’s expertise is in the airline industry, in transport finance, and in financial analysis in retailing. Strong has written extensively on the airline industry economics and safety issues, on economics and finance in developing countries, and on infrastructure finance in transport. His books, written with distinguished co-authors, include Managing the Skies: Public Policy, Organization, and Financing of Air Traffic Management, (Ashgate, 2008, in Chinese 2012);  Moving to Market: Restructuring Transport in the Former Soviet Union, (Harvard University Press, 1996); Why Airplanes Crash: Aviation Safety in a Changing World, (Oxford University Press, 1992), and Airline Deregulation and the Future of Intercity Travel, (MIT Press, 1987).

Strong has designed and taught workshops on transport issues for the World Bank in Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, India, and Southeast Asia. Strong has served as a consultant to the World Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the Inter-American Development Bank, the US Department of Transportation and the Antitrust Division of the US Department of Justice. He has worked on airport, air navigation, and regulatory issues in the United States, Southeast Asia, Latin America, India, Africa, and the former Soviet Union for both governments and private organizations.

Strong also has more than 25 years’ experience in the financial analysis of the global retailing industry.  His expertise involves financial analysis of retailing, especially in the areas of productivity performance, capital investments; and acquisition valuation.  He has published a number of articles and cases on these subjects.  He has been involved in consulting and executive education with leading retailers across North America, Latin America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia/New Zealand.
