Saatchi & Saatchi Worldwide Chairman to Lead Discussion on Leadership

Richard Hytner

Richard Hytner, Deputy Chairman, Saatchi & Saatchi Worldwide, will lead discussion with W&M students on leadership at 12:30 pm, October 20 in the Brinkley Commons Room in Alan B. Miller Hall.

Hytner is the author of Consiglieri: Leading from the Shadows. Published by Profile Books in June 2014, it is a celebration of the craft of leadership that supports, counsels, challenges and checks the out and out charismatic leader.

His topic for the 12:30 pm session will be “Leading from the Shadows:  Creating Impact as the #2 in Command”.

Hytner will engage students on the central premise of his book which challenges the conventional wisdom that getting to the top is the key to success. He turns the spotlight on the “second-in-commands” who are too often disparaged as the ‘No. 2’. Instead, he suggests that these individuals can have tremendous influence to determine the fate of countries, companies and individual ventures all over the world. His examples range from Alastair Campbell and Hillary Clinton to Rasputin, Machiavelli, and Peter Mandelson. In speaking with many successful consiglieri, he reveals their motivations, what makes them great, and what bosses can do to help them flourish.

A law graduate from Cambridge University, Hytner is responsible for global strategy and innovation at Saatchi & Saatchi, which he joined in 2003 as its CEO for Europe, Middle East and Africa. Today, as Deputy Chairman, he works with leaders and leadership teams from many of Saatchi & Saatchi’s worldwide clients.

Richard is Adjunct Associate Professor of Marketing at London Business School, where he graduated as a Sloan Fellow in 2003. He lives in London with his wife, Rosie; they have two children, Joe and Sophie. Beyond family and football – he co-founded the Manchester United Supporters’ Trust to promote fan ownership of the club – Richard is a literature, theatre and film fan.
