Smithfield is the world's largest pork processor and hog producer, with about $15 billion a year in sales.
Pope has spent 35 years at the company, starting as a controller. He became Chief Financial Officer in 1999 and President and Chief Operating Officer in 2001. He succeeded Joseph W. Luter III as Chief Executive Officer in 2006.
