Howard Elkus

An internationally acclaimed architect and urban designer, Howard Elkus has been responsible for the design of many of the country’s most exciting and game-changing mixed-use projects. Since co-founding Elkus Manfredi Architects in 1988 and previously as a principal of The Architects Collaborative, Mr. Elkus’s visionary work has consistently broken new ground. Recent projects include design and planning for the million-square-foot retail base for Hudson Yards, a major new mixed-use destination in New York City; master planning and architectural design for Miami Worldcenter, a 27-acre downtown redevelopment that brings the heart of Miami into the 21st century; Las Vegas City Hall, a signature design that pays homage to the past, present, and future of the city; two 47-story glass residential towers currently under construction on the Hudson River in Fort Lee, New Jersey; and a new 43-story residential tower and retail addition for Copley Place in Boston, the flagship prototype for mixed-use urban centers that Mr. Elkus planned and designed 30 years ago. Other large-scale mixed-use destinations are equally legendary — The Shops at Columbus Circle at the Time Warner Center in New York City and the world-famous paradigm of new urbanism, CityPlace in West Palm Beach.

Currently, Mr. Elkus is creating the next generation of transformational mixed-use destinations with the remaking of Boston’s iconic Faneuil Hall Marketplace. He continues his 22-year relationship with Emerson College, as it completes its campus relocation to Boston’s Midtown Cultural District, with the design of two new projects for student residences, dining facilities, and social space. Internationally, Mr. Elkus is leading design teams for major mixed-use projects on prominent sites in Abu Dhabi, Beirut, and Istanbul, among other cities.

Howard Elkus holds a Master of Architecture with Distinction from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University. He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Boston Society of Architects, and a LEED Accredited Professional. Mr. Elkus is also an active member of the Boston Preservation Alliance, International Council of Shopping Centers, and Urban Land Institute; serves on the Board of Overseers for the Boston Architectural College; and is a member of the Boston Committee on Foreign Relations as well as the Board of Directors of the Old North Foundation.
