New edition of Financial Valuation Applications and Models textbook highlights advancements in business valuation techniques

The fifth edition of Financial Valuation: Applications and Models (FVAM), co-authored by Professor Harold Martin, was recently published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc. This textbook is a comprehensive guide on the methods and tools used in business valuation and serves as a significant resource for valuation professionals, educators, and students.

FVAM, a collaboration between 30 leading experts in the field, provides detailed insights into the valuation of closely held businesses and intangible assets, with a strong emphasis on practical applications and the latest valuation techniques. It also incorporates updated discussions on valuation theory and presents consensus views on how this theory should be applied in real-world scenarios. The book is designed to serve as a reference guide for professionals and a teaching tool for educators in accounting and finance.

For Martin, this latest edition marks another milestone in his longstanding contributions to the accounting field. An adjunct faculty member at the Raymond A. Mason School of Business at William & Mary, Martin has spent over two decades teaching forensic accounting in the Master of Accounting program and guest lecturing on valuation topics at the Mason School and School of Law. His expertise, spanning more than 40 years, extends beyond academia into professional consulting, with over 2,000 valuation and forensic projects completed across 220 industries.

Of significant note, FVAM has been adopted as the primary textbook for the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) National Business Valuation School for which Martin has served as an instructor for 17 years. It has also been adopted by the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts (NACVA) Advanced Valuation: Applications and Models course. The AICPA is also incorporating the 5th edition into its newly developed university curriculum for undergraduate and graduate business programs, which will be rolled out later this year. Martin, who serves on the AICPA task force developing this curriculum, notes the growing emphasis on valuation education as a key development in the field of accounting.

Martin’s dual career as a professional consultant and educator adds a unique perspective to his work on FVAM. As a Director in the Valuation and Forensic Services (VFS) Practice at Keiter, a CPA and consulting firm in Richmond, Virginia, Martin has held leadership roles and been instrumental in developing specialized forensic and valuation services. His extensive experience also includes providing expert testimony for litigations involving valuation issues in courts across the United States, including the U.S. District Court and U.S. Bankruptcy Court, and collaborating with agencies such as the SEC, FBI, and U.S. Department of Justice.

Martin also serves as the Managing Director of the Financial Consulting Group (FCG), the leading organization of independent valuation and financial consulting firms in North America. FCG provides member firms the opportunity to collaborate in knowledge-sharing, teaming on projects, practice development, and training through participation in FCG University, webinars hosted by national experts, online discussion forums, and professional publications.
