Founded in 1968 by J.D. “Dave” Power III from his kitchen table, J.D. Power and Associates is a California-based research marketing firm originally focused on the automobile industry. Today, the company evaluates consumer products and services ranging from boats to hospitals to new home builders throughout North America, Europe and Asia Pacific. With assistance from Jamey, Dave just completed a new book that chronicles his experiences and 50 years in the automobile business entitled, Power: How J.D. Power III Became the Auto Industry's Adviser, Confessor, and Eyewitness to History.
Jamey, the oldest of four children, received a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of San Diego and began his career in the advertising field. He joined his father’s company in 1990 and was assigned responsibility of managing research projects and joint ventures in the Asia-Pacific region. In 1997, he took charge of the company’s international operations, which included a dozen overseas offices. During this period, the international business grew to represent about 20 percent of the company’s overall business, and offices were established throughout Asia, Europe and Canada to conduct studies in many countries throughout the world. Most recently he facilitated the transition from a private business to becoming part of The McGraw Hill Companies. He is also working on a follow-up to his first book, published in 2006.
On Monday, Jamey will spend the day on campus meeting with undergraduate and graduate students from the Business School. Before his public presentation, he will discuss customer research and satisfaction, marketing and strategy with a small group of students and faculty.
