Rebecca Gildea awarded Anderson Scholarship
Rebecca M. Gildea, a rising senior majoring in Accounting, has been awarded the Alvin P. Anderson Scholarship.
The $5,000 scholarship was established by Towne Bank and the Anderson family in honor of Alvin Powers Anderson '70, J.D. '72, to provide assistance to students who embody the qualities associated with Mr. Anderson to prepare them to continue his work.
Alvin P. Anderson was a dedicated alumnus. He served on the Board of Visitors of William & Mary, was elected president of the William & Mary Alumni Association, was a Trustee of the Law School and in 1998, received the Alumni Medallion. He died in 2008.
He was known as an energetic person with a real gusto for life, a master storyteller and a true gentleman who cared about people around him. A good friend noted, "He had the unique ability to turn 'good' into 'best," challenges into successes and professional relationships into friendships." These are among the qualities that Anderson Scholars emulate.
In order to be considered for an Anderson Scholarship, students must meet certain criteria including acceptance in the Mason School as a full-time, degree-seeking student, a minimum GPA of 3.0 and demonstrated record of leadership and/or service to the college and/or the local community.
Rebecca Gildea, of Fairfax, Va., is an Accounting major with a concentration in Finance. She has served as a William & Mary Tour Guide and on the Panhellenic Council, and participates in the Student Managed Investment Fund and Finance Academy.
