MS in NPM Academics

30 Credits. One Unmatched Washington, D.C. Experience.

William & Mary's Master of Science in Nonprofit Management prepares you to lead with purpose in a sector where mission, resources, and impact must be managed with equal rigor. Our program blends the strategic and financial disciplines of top-tier management education with the ethical grounding, community fluency, and mission-driven mindset that effective nonprofit leadership demands. You'll work alongside classmates from across the sector—arts, education, human services, advocacy, philanthropy—building a professional network that will serve you throughout your career.

MS in NPM Applied Experiences

Nonprofit management can't be learned from a textbook alone, it's learned in boardrooms, on program floors, and in the day-to-day work of running a mission-driven organization. That's why fieldwork isn't a single capstone moment in this program it runs through three connected experiences.

  • Practicum: See the Sector from the Inside

Before you specialize, you'll rotate through a series of short-term placements across different nonprofit organizations, combining hands-on volunteer work with shadowing of back-office operations: finance, HR, development, programs. You'll also be paired with a professional mentor who can offer real-world guidance on building a career in the sector.

  • Internship: Go Deep in One Organization

With a sense of the landscape established, you'll immerse yourself in a substantial, program-approved internship at a DC-area nonprofit taking on real organizational management responsibilities rather than observing from the sidelines. Students interested in social enterprise may instead choose a placement with a nonprofit incubator or accelerator.

  • Capstone: Lead Your Own Initiative

In your final term, you'll design and execute an individual leadership project that addresses a real issue facing a nonprofit organization, applying everything you've learned in finance, marketing, analytics, and governance. Through mentorship and peer feedback, you'll refine your approach and present your findings, demonstrating that you're ready to lead from day one.

Curriculum

The curriculum is built around a clear progression: you'll begin with the foundations of nonprofit governance, finance, and strategy; move into specialized coursework in fundraising, program evaluation, and community engagement; and culminate in an applied, client-based capstone where you consult for a real nonprofit organization. Graduates leave prepared to lead organizations, launch new initiatives, and make an immediate, measurable difference in the communities they serve.
