What prompted you to return to school and earn an MBA degree?
Taking a different career path from my undergraduate major, I was at a point where I had gained significant experience but needed the credentials to advance. I was motivated to hone my leadership skills and step into management roles, and I determined earning an MBA was the most logical step toward achieving my goals.
Why William & Mary?
William & Mary was always at the top of my list while researching schools. I was initially drawn to the school because I love visiting Williamsburg as a tourist and experiencing the beauty of the campus. Having attended an undergraduate school of over 20,000 students, I found that a smaller university and class size were appealing. While researching the Full-Time MBA program, I learned about the unique Executive Partner program, which was a significant factor in my decision. This program has surpassed my expectations; having a mentor who understands my career history and professional ambitions has been instrumental in my job search and career planning. The team-based learning approach has been an incredible opportunity to collaborate with people with different life experiences and perspectives, creating unique and innovative outcomes. I knew the program would push me outside my comfort zone, and I arrived at orientation week open-mindedly and prepared for a challenging but rewarding semester.
What are some highlights from your time in the MBA program?
Orientation week was significant because it laid out the program's value and heightened our expectations. It was a substantial period because I felt optimistic about the benefits our class could reap from the program and supported by experts who advocated for out success in the first year. Another memorable experience was networking with MBA alumni. Meeting successful professionals eager to help us and connecting with classmates personally and professionally was invaluable. Another program highlight is the randomized pairings of students for group work and assignments, which lead to great friendships and working relationships.
How have you applied what you learned in the program to your internship?
During my summer internship, I intentionally connected with fellow interns and collaborated with them during training to ensure a full working knowledge of the topics. Before the program, I might have been overly focused on competing tasks without recognizing the importance of networking. I now make a point to represent myself professionally and bring an MBA candidate's perspective to discussions and collaborations. I've also prioritized sharing and acquiring knowledge, understanding that interns with different educational backgrounds will offer varied perspectives.
What value will the MBA degree have on your professional growth?
Pursuing an MBA degree has significantly impacted my professional growth by increasing my confidence and offering valuable leadership and collaborative experiences. I've learned to trust my instincts and take calculated risks in my career. I also feel more confident navigating networking events and giving presentations. It wasn't until the interview stage of the internship search that I realized how much I had evolved as a professional.
