What prompted you to return to school and earn an MBA degree?
I transitioned from back-of-house roles to managerial positions, including running a small business specializing in gluten-free vegan pastries in Princeton, NJ. I also took on a marketing consultant role for a Yoga Therapist School. These experiences ignited my passion for professional growth and revealed how my creativity and problem-solving skills could be leveraged on a larger scale in the corporate world.
Managing a diverse team of women with various languages and skill sets taught me that effective leadership is crucial for fostering a positive work environment and supporting individual progress. I realized that earning an MBA would enable me to shift from hospitality to a broader business context, opening doors to new opportunities and challenges.
Why did you choose William & Mary?
I searched for an established school with a solid national and international reputation. I also wanted to feel genuinely supported in my journey of pivoting to a new career path. When I visited William & Mary, I found a beautiful, historic campus filled with blooming flowers and a welcoming atmosphere. The professors, Executive Partners, and career advisors showed genuine interest in my growth and success. I wasn't just a number; I was part of a diverse community of students from different cultures, career paths, and stages of life. The sense of support and belonging made William & Mary the perfect choice for me.
Additionally, several aspects of the MBA program stood out to me. I was drawn to the Executive Partner Program because it would offer invaluable mentorship and networking opportunities. The Global Business Immersions would allow me to visit places I had never considered, helping me enrich my understanding of the world and providing opportunities to collaborate with several consulting groups. Finally, working in teams with students from different backgrounds would allow me to strengthen my collaborative skills. These experiences have met and exceeded my expectations, reinforcing my decision to join this fantastic school and program.
What are some highlights from your time in the MBA program?
My time in the MBA program has been filled with memorable experiences. MBAA—sponsored events, such as trips to Busch Gardens and seasonal dances, have been fantastic opportunities to bond with classmates. Mug nights with professors and speed rounds of elevator pitches with Executive Partners have been fun and enriching. The regular meetings with Executive Partners have provided invaluable insights and guidance. These highlights have made my MBA journey incredibly rewarding and enjoyable, all thanks to the people I've had the honor to meet.
How have you applied what you learned in the program to your professional life?
While I've always considered myself more of a poet than a quant, the MBA program has significantly enhanced my quantitative skills. I've applied hard skills in data analysis, finance, consulting, and global strategy to my professional life. These skills have been invaluable in my internships and helped me tackle complex business challenges confidently.
What value will the MBA degree have on your professional growth?
The MBA program has made me feel like a more well-rounded professional and has boosted my confidence in progressing into the corporate world. I will gain the tools necessary to advance my career and solidify my trajectory toward achieving my professional goals. The degree has been instrumental in preparing me for the next steps in my career journey.
