Why did you pursue an MBA?
Over the past decade, there has been a significant shift in the utility and locality sectors, where leaders are now expected to possess a robust understanding of financial management, leadership, and data analytics. I recognized the need for a comprehensive educational foundation to meet these evolving demands and effectively contribute to my company's growth. An EMBA program offered precisely that—equipping me with the tools and knowledge to navigate complex financial landscapes, drive strategic leadership, and leverage data-driven insights for informed decision-making. This advanced degree has empowered me to make meaningful contributions to my organization and stay ahead in a rapidly changing industry.
Why William & Mary?
William & Mary offers a top-tier public education that ranks in the top third of all business schools. Seven staff members from my company, including our General Manager, have graduated from the program in the past 15 years. Since my company had so many preceding William & Mary EMBA graduates, I had the luxury of speaking to each of them about their experience before applying for the program. The closeness of the cohort, exceptional faculty and staff, and intensity of the classes and material were highlighted in my discussions; after completing the program in 2023, I finally understood what the hype was all about.
What were some highlights for you during the EMBA experience?
Among the most significant highlights of my experience were the Global Business Immersion trips to Athens, Greece, and Tel Aviv, Israel. These trips offered a unique opportunity to witness and engage with two distinctly different economic environments. I explored historic yet evolving market dynamics in Athens while Tel Aviv showcased a vibrant and innovative business landscape. Both experiences provided invaluable insights into global economic trends and practices. Additionally, networking with international business leaders enriched my perspective on global commerce, and the chance to bond with my cohort in these diverse settings created lasting connections and shared memories. These immersive experiences were instrumental in broadening my understanding of global business and enhancing my professional network.
What value has the MBA had on your career?
My experience in the EMBA program has profoundly enhanced my understanding of the complexities and challenges associated with my company's OPEX and CAPEX. I now have a more precise grasp of leveraging this knowledge to drive organizational improvements. Although I hold the same position as before, the advanced skills and insights I've gained have significantly elevated my decision-making capabilities. I am now making more informed choices and contributing more effectively to HRSD. Additionally, I am applying my newfound expertise in strategic decision-making, organizational behavior, and management practices to spearhead meaningful change and drive organizational success.
