Biography
Deborah Allen Hewitt is a Clinical Professor Emerita of Economics & Finance at William & Mary's Raymond A. Mason School of Business. Dr. Hewitt holds her Ph.D. from Duke University, where she was a James B. Duke scholar. She is a member of the Investment Advisory Committee of the Virginia Retirement System (VRS), and a Trustee Emeritus of the Board of Trustees of the Endowment of William & Mary, from which she received her BA in economics with high honors. She is a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
Dr. Hewitt lived and worked abroad for nearly 20 years. She lived in Japan during the height of their bubble economy in the late 1980s-early 1990s, and in Thailand during their rapid growth period. She continues her international travels by leading MBA Global Immersion classes to destinations such as China, India, Brazil, and South Africa. She previously taught international economics and finance at UCLA and Claremont Graduate School.
Dr. Hewitt has published numerous academic and business articles on the subjects of international trade and finance. She also co-authored with her business partner, John Rutledge, the book RUST TO RICHES: The Coming of the Second Industrial Revolution (Harper & Row, 1989) which was translated into Japanese and was a business best-seller in Japan. Dr. Hewitt has contributed articles to several business and investment publications including Standard & Poor's Credit Week and Bottom Line, as well as The Wall Street Journal and Barron's. She was a frequent panelist on Wall Street Week with Louis Rukeyser for five years, and has appeared recently on Fox Business News, Bloomberg TV, and NPR national radio.
Dr. Hewitt was previously President of Claremont Economics Institute, an economics consulting and forecasting firm which advised the first Reagan administration. She was the Chairman of The Claremont Fund, a family of mutual funds, from 1984 to 1988. She has also worked as an international economist at the US Treasury.
