Biography

A 1971 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Howard served 8 1/2 years on active duty as a Surface Warfare Officer. Assignments included numerous surface ships and completion of a master's degree at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA. He remained in the Reserves after active duty and retired as a Navy Captain with 24 years of service. In 1980, Howard entered the corrugated shipping container industry and served in many positions, including Plant Manager and Plant General Manager. After joining Packaging Corporation of America in 1994 as an area operations/manufacturing manager, responsible for nine plants, he was tasked with the development of a new corporate group whose mission was to generate cost savings opportunities company-wide for the most strategic customers. Howard retired in 2014 as the Corporate Director, Operations Analysis Group. At that time, the Corporation included more than 100 manufacturing plants and 9 paper mills.
