Dominion Continues Tradition of Support
Dominion Resources is continuing its longstanding tradition of support for education by underwriting a $350,000, 60-seat tiered classroom in Miller Hall of the Mason School of Business.
The
donation reflects Dominion's support for education and is in
recognition of William and Mary's use of environmentally friendly
standards when designing Miller Hall. The structure will be designed
and built to meet the stringent requirements of the Leadership in
Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program for its energy usage and
environmental impact.
"The decision to design and construct the Mason School to meet the rigorous LEED standards set by the U.S. Green Building Council demonstrates that William and Mary is committed to excellent environmental stewardship," said William C. Hall Jr., vice president of Corporate Communications for Dominion Resources and president of the Dominion Foundation.
From compact fluorescent lighting to environmentally safe carpeting to positioning of the building for maximum use of sun and shade, Miller Hall is part of today's "green building" movement. The School seeks to achieve a "silver" level certification for the building. The levels of certification are certified, silver, gold and platinum - the highest. This system verifies that a building project is an environmentally responsible and healthy place to live and work
"Dominion strives to operate in harmony with the environment and in a manner that supports the local economy and community," said Hall. "This building will accomplish both of these goals."
For Dominion, the gift also represents an investment in its workforce. Supporting programs for talented students from schools like William & Mary is critical to Dominion's future. Graduates understand the challenges that businesses face, and they are better prepared for their roles as citizens, consumers and employees.
In recent years, Dominion's generous support for William & Mary has benefitted the Virginia Institute for Marine Science (VIMS) and the Mason School's field consultancy program, and faculty development across the College.
"We cherish the relationship we have developed with Dominion over the years," said Dean Larry B. Pulley. "Dominion is a leading corporation in Virginia and our partnership with them enhances the educational experience we offer our students and provides career opportunities for our graduates. Miller Hall is a huge milestone in the life of this business school. Dominion's most recent gift of a classroom in our new building is a significant investment in future generations of students and business leaders and a wonderful and enduring public testament to a great partnership."
