Actively Promoting Sustainable Business
Tyler Rutter enjoys watching and playing sports, as well as being active on campus and in the Business School. How is he promoting sustainable business practices and where will his IPS lead him next?
About Me
I am a passionate fan of Philadelphia Sports, enjoy working out at the gym, and like playing basketball and golf. For a brief time in elementary school, I lived and went to school in England. While I was abroad, I had the opportunity to learn more advanced math for my age. This helped to develop my math abilities and allowed me to jump ahead in math class. This also inspired my love of numbers and has probably led to my choice of major.
I began my college career aspiring to be a Finance major. However, it was my trip to Wall Street with the Finance Academy that made me realize that my true passion was in Accounting. It was the perfect marriage of numbers and people, two things I knew I needed in my career to make me a successful part of an organization.
My Individual Program of Study (IPS) switched to include an Accounting major and a Finance concentration. I still enjoyed Finance classes and realized that knowledge of the markets would be a great building block for future work in business. Additionally, I found my Psychology classes interesting and added a Psychology minor. This will be beneficial in any field, because I believe that the ability to better understand individuals you work with can improve your relationship with them.
Impact & Engagement
In my time at William & Mary, I have been very active in the extracurricular programs available to students. I have served as a Resident Assistant for two years in Yates Hall, and I am currently a Head Resident in Barrett Hall. As part of my position, I spend time getting to know my RA staff through things like kickball.
I am also a brother in Beta Theta Pi Fraternity and serving as President of Order of Omega, a Greek honor society. Additionally, I am part of One in Four, which is a student organization that educates freshman guys about sexual assault and prevention.
Highlights
As part of Net Impact, I volunteered as Co-Chair for William & Mary’s Corporate & College Collaborative for Sustainability. Working with other students and Prof. Chris Adkins (Direct of our Undergraduate Program) to plan the Collaborative was definitely one of the highlights of my time here. This event was the first undergraduate intercollegiate symposium based on sustainability and business. It went extremely well and set a guideline for the future collaborative teams.
Also having the opportunity to attend the Net Impact conference at Cornell University, with four other students and Prof. Adkins, was a great experience. We heard incredible speakers and learned a lot about the growing field of sustainable practices in business.
Another highlight of the Mason School of Business has been the professors. They have been phenomenal inside and outside the classroom. They have been integral in my pursuits of work beyond college, as well as choosing between possible employers. Many have also served as mentors throughout my college experience.
Next Steps
In order to meet the prerequisites for the CPA Exam, I’ve been overloading classes to earn 150 credit hours. After taking two more classes this summer, I will have completed all of the required coursework. I will also be spending the summer studying for the CPA exam, in order to be prepared to start working in November. Earlier this year, I signed with McGladrey for full time employment in audit in their Philadelphia office.
