Leading the Tribe
Mike Callahan is a quarterback on the Tribe Football team as well as a business entrepreneur. With his interest in athletics, studying abroad, real estate, accounting and law, how can he pack everything into his IPS? Mike's thoughts are below:
About Me
I grew up playing sports and loving physical activity. This carried over to high school where I played both football and basketball. I was fortunate enough to captain both teams as a senior.
Football is what brought me to William and Mary along with the school's excellent reputation for students looking to excel in business. This past May I completed my junior year. I am currently taking summer classes and training for the upcoming football season.
Highlights
I would have to say that the first year foundation semester was the highlight of my business school career. The foundation semester is everyone's first semester in business school and really touches on all aspects of business.
I personally enjoyed the team synergy that developed from the foundation semester. It really helped carry us through the projects and presentations. The workload was heavy, but the information and lessons I learned in that semester were irreplaceable.
Defining Moment
My defining moment during my business school year would have to be the Real Estate Development conference that I attended in April of 2008. My father owns a construction company and I have grown up with a constant supply of information concerning all aspects of a construction business. This has translated into an interest in real estate and development.
The two-day conference was awesome. It started with a two hour presentation led by two local developers. The next day, we sat in on a meeting led by Prudential. This meeting consisted of over 30 developers from all across the country discussing their problems and offering advice to one another. Following the event, the business school held a cocktail reception which provided us with a networking opportunity.
Future Plans
I plan to graduate in May of 2010, but because I was redshirted in my freshman year on the football team, I will be staying at William and Mary for a fifth year. During my fifth year, I hope to enter the MAcc Program and study for my masters in accounting. I will also take the LSAT's and apply to law schools.
I have heard great things about studying abroad and have been trying to work one into my academic career. This has been difficult to arrange because of football requirements in both the fall and spring semesters. If everything works out, I will be studying abroad in Sydney, Australia this upcoming winter break for three weeks.
