Online Presence

With the recent emergence of social media as a means for professional communication, managing your online presence has becoming increasing important.

Linked In

This professional networking site allows students and professionals to share ideas and opportunities.  Creating a profile can be a beneficial step towards networking with executives in a prospective career field.  Below are some tips on creating an effective profile.

  • When creating your profile, use your resume as a starting point.  Copy and paste pertinent information about your employment experience, education, and industry interests into your profile.
  • Use the "Professional Summary" area to highlight your experiences.  Don't forget to include a professional - but interesting - headline because that is the first thing a prospective employer will see.
  • To optimize the chances of a prospective employer finding your profile while searching, include all keywords and skills from your resume and specify what industry you are most interested in.  Including relevant links in the "Links" section also helps maximize search possibilities.  Be sure to make your profile "Public" or employers and contacts will not be able to find it.
  • Build your network by connecting with those you know and gaining recommendations.  Use the "advanced search" feature of Linked In to find fellow alumni.  This, in turn, will help you make more connections!
