Requirements

Students seeking admission to the Mason School of Business's Undergraduate Program must first be accepted to the College of William & Mary.  If you are not currently a student at the College, or are not currently accepted into the College, please contact the Office of Undergraduate Admission.

Admissions Information

Admission into the Business School for both majors and minors is a competitive process.  The selection is largely based on GPA from your previous coursework.  There is limited space available and the availability differs between semesters and programs.

The Mason School of Business admits a total of 225 students to the major program each year (180 in the Fall semester, and 45 in the Spring semester).  Students admitted to the business majors program will finalize their choice of major discipline (accounting, finance, marketing, or process management/consulting) as part of the Integrated Foundation Semester which is taken during the first semester as a business major.

The minors program offers non-business majors the opportunity to gain in-depth exposure to one business discipline.  Applicants for the minors program must select a choice of discipline (accounting, finance, management, marketing, or process management/consulting) at the time of application.

Application Information

All students planning to major or minor in business must apply for competitive admission though our brief online application. Applications from currently enrolled William and Mary students received after the application deadline will be considered only if the admission limit has not been attained.  Information sessions are offered in early September and late January as the application becomes available.

Prerequisite Requirements for Majors Program
Our competitive admission is based upon cumulative GPA (grade point average), junior standing (obtained 54 credit hours) and the completion of five prerequisite courses.

Prerequisites courses include:
  • Principles of Accounting (BUAD 203)
  • Introductory Microeconomics (ECON 101 or ECON 151)
  • Introductory Macroeconomics (ECON 102 or ECON 152)
  • Introductory Calculus (MATH 108, MATH 111, MATH 112, MATH 131, or MATH 132)
  • Introductory Statistics (BUAD 231, MATH 106, ECON 307, PSYC 301, SOCL 353, MATH 351, or KINE 394)

Majors are required to have at least a 2.0 GPA, however, as admission is a competitive process, this does not guarantee acceptance into the business program.

Student transferring from the Virginia Community College System, Richard Bland or other institutions should consult the transfer credit guidelines available on the College Admissions website.

Prerequisite Requirements for Minors Program
Admission into a minors program is a competitive process, based on cumulative GPA.  Minors are required to have at least a 2.75 GPA, however, as admission is a competitive process, this does not guarantee acceptance into the minor program.  Minors select a specific discipline of business to study and each discipline has differing prerequisites.  Prerequisites must be completed prior to entry into the program.

Prerequisite information for each discipline can be found in the Business Minor section of our website.
