Leadership Development Experience

The research is compelling: organizations consistently rank leadership development and ability among the top characteristics they look for in potential new hires and in high performing managers and executives.

The College of William and Mary’s Mason School of Business is uniquely able to provide full-time MBA students with highly individualized leadership development that allows them to accelerate their leadership growth and development.  Through the Leadership Development Experience (“LDE”), all first year MBAs will experience a class designed to help them grow and develop as a leader by blending the best of an interactive classroom atmosphere and experiential learning opportunities.

Mason’s LDE course sets itself apart from other business school offerings by providing you with your own personal leadership coach.  You will be assigned a coach chosen from our volunteer Executive Partner organization of experienced executives and proven leaders.  Your coach will challenge and guide you in developing your leadership potential. Your coach will be committed to your success.  The Mason School of Business is truly exceptional and unique in that it’s the only school in the U.S. where all full time MBA students are paired with an experienced executive as a leadership coach.

The framework for the LDE course is a newly revised Leadership Competency Model uniquely developed by the Mason School of Business. The course is structured around the model’s eleven competencies together with the related behaviors that define each competency.  The competencies are grouped into three broad areas:

  • Personal Growth and Development
  • Develop Interpersonal Skills
  • Lead with Impact

The goal of LDE — and high performance leadership — is to inspire and energize you to “Be the Difference.” It’s about striving for excellence in yourself and those around you. At Mason we believe that students who take ownership and make a full commitment to this leadership development opportunity will have the foundation to transform themselves into the compelling individual organizations are seeking.
