Biography
John S. Strong is Professor of Economics and Finance at the College of William and Mary (USA). He received his master's and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard, where he also has been a visiting professor and a research fellow. He has been a Fulbright Scholar and a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellow.
Strong has written extensively on the airline industry economics and safety issues, on economics and finance in developing countries, and on project finance in transport. His books, written with distinguished co-authors, include Moving to Market: Restructuring Transport in the Former Soviet Union, (Harvard University Press, 1996); Why Airplanes Crash: Aviation Safety in a Changing World, (Oxford University Press, 1992), and Airline Deregulation and the Future of Intercity Travel, (MIT Press, 1987).
Strong has designed and taught workshops on transport issues for the World Bank in Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, India, and Southeast Asia. Strong has served as a consultant to the World Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the Inter-American Development Bank, the US Department of Transportation and the Antitrust Division of the US Department of Justice. He has worked on airport, air navigation, and regulatory issues in the United States, Southeast Asia, Latin America, India, Africa, and the former Soviet Union for both governments and private organizations.
