Undergraduate Program establishes Net Impact Chapter

Net Impact

WILLIAMSBURG, VA -- At the Mason School of Business, undergraduates are looking for more opportunities to learn about environmental and socially responsible practices, even beyond the classroom.

Working with Chris Adkins, Director of the Undergraduate Business Program, a group of business majors came together to explore new ideas, and this January established Virginia's first undergraduate chapter of Net Impact.

Net Impact exists to cultivate values-driven business leaders by equipping and empowering them to be social and environmental change-makers as they enter the workforce. Seniors David Gordon and Julian Oreska, and juniors Kristina Dumas, Tejal Patel, and Baiyin Zhou pioneered this group this past fall semester after realizing that there was no other organization of this nature.

Net Impact is a way for students to be a stimulus for sustainable change in the business school and, conversely, to take advantage of the resources that are available through joining this national organization.

Integration of environmental, social, and ethical values into the foundation of business has recently become a principal concern for companies. Students in Net Impact gain exposure to these issues during their undergraduate work and will enter the workforce with a competitive advantage.

This organization will host networking events and bring speakers to campus that will facilitate student interaction with potential employers of sustainable enterprises. Beyond career exploration, Net Impact will be working to green the William and Mary campus.

The semester will culminate with a Spring Symposium where the Mason School of Business can express the importance of sustainability and, thus, the impact we can make through environmental and ethical business practices.

Net Impact is an opportunity for Mason students to be emerging leaders and forward thinkers as they enter the professional world.
