MAcc program celebrates fall milestones

by Martha HowardNovember 17, 2009

Welcoming a record class of 68 students into beautiful new Miller Hall this past August was just the first of many milestones for the Master of Accounting program this fall.

September's Meet the Firms Friday firmly established a new recruiting method for W&M Accounting majors and MAccs. Instead of relying on individual company presentations hosted over a period of several weeks, MtFF provides one large forum where all the firms gather and meet several hundred undergraduate and graduate students.

A joint effort of Mason Career Services, the Gibbs Society and the MAcc program, MtFF was a great success last year with over 200 students in attendance. This year's event -- the first at Miller Hall -- was an even bigger success with over 300 students and now the switch is official: it's goodbye to Gibbs presentations and hello to Meet the Firms Friday.

October's annual Gibbs Society Dinner welcomed approximately 200 students, faculty members and recruiters to the Williamsburg Lodge to hear guest speaker - and new Accounting Programs Board member - Mark Olson offer his thoughts on the role of regulation in response to the past year's financial upheavals. Mr. Olson is a former chairman of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board and a former member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors.

In November, the College of W&M once again sent two teams to the finals of the Deloitte Tax Case Study Competition in Orlando, Florida. Under the expert guidance of Professor Jim Smith, the teams (one undergraduate and one graduate) vied with the best and the brightest of their peers. The undergraduate team took second place.

The "Super CPAs" list in the November issue of Virginia Business saw three MAcc faculty honored as outstanding practitioners. The honor is a project of the VSCPA and is awarded in twelve categories. All certified accountants registered with the VBOA are eligible for the honor.  W&M's Howard Busbee and Jim Smith were two of only seven CPAs recognized for their role as educators while MAcc forensic accounting professor Harold Martin was recognized for his work in Business Valuation and Litigation.

Currently, plans are underway for the MAcc program's annual Veris CPAtrek. If you're in the DC area on the evening of Wednesday, December 9, please join us at the Lebanese Taverna at Tyson's Galleria for an alumni reception.
