Jim is an Adjunct Professor of Marketing at the Mason School of Business. He comes to teaching with 25+ years of career experience spanning several different industries. Jim started his career as an engineering project manager at a Washington DC area engineering consulting firm. After that, he spent eleven years at American Cyanamid Company (now Cytec Industries) in various roles including sales, sales management, product development, marketing, and global business unit strategy. After Cytec, Jim spent a couple of years in merchandising and product development at Shonfeld’s USA (NY based, fast growing startup company that designs and manufactures innovative products for fancy food, gift, and health/beauty segments). After graduating from the MBA program at Mason, in 2002, he spent the next last 10 years at McGraw-Hill Higher Education in various roles including Director of Market Research, VP of Marketing, VP of the Digital Products Division, and Senior VP of Marketing Strategy for Higher Education ($1.2B revenues). He led the Corporate Affairs team during the spinoff and sale of McGraw-Hill Education the Apollo Group in 2012. Jim left McGraw-Hill shortly after the sale and moved from Chicago back to Williamsburg to be closer to family and home.
Today, along with teaching Marketing at Mason, Jim maintains a busy schedule as an equity partner in a startup environmental products company and as a marketing consultant in the higher education space. Jim holds a bachelor’s degree in Engineering from Virginia Tech and a MBA from The Mason School of Business at the College of William and Mary. He has held positions on boards at Coursesmart.com (now Ingram), the Software and Information Industry Association (SIIA) and the National Association of College Stores (NACS). Jim lives in Williamsburg with his wife Jan.
