Before his retirement, Yu spent more than 25 years managing NASA's Aeronautics and Space Research and Development Programs both at NASA Langley Research Center and at NASA Headquarters. In his last 12 years, he was Senior Executive responsible for both research and development programs and organization development. Other positions he has held include Associate Director for Technology Integration, Deputy Director for Aerodynamics, Aerothermodynamics and Acoustics, Division Chief and Deputy Director for Structures. Yu's major areas of management competencies include strategy development and implementation, organizational renewal, process innovation and re-engineering and leadership development. Prior to his NASA career, Yu was on the graduate engineering faculty of George Washington University where he advised students in masters and doctorate programs.
Yu received his master's degree in aerospace engineering and his doctorate in mechanical engineering from Syracuse University. He was a Sloan Fellow and received a master's degree in management from the Graduate School of Business of Stanford University. He also completed the Senior Manager in Government course at the Kennedy School for Government at Harvard University.
