James McGlothlin
James McGlothlin is the founder and former President of the United Coal Company, the original foundation of one of the most successful and innovative coal corporations, the United Company. A graduate of the William and Mary undergraduate program and William and Mary Law, McGlothlin has remained an active part of the William and Mary community, meeting with faculty, staff and students and speaking on a variety of subjects, including employee engagement, business plans, operations and entrepreneurship. He is also known for the "McGlothlin Framework," a pioneering energy policy discussed at the Virginia Coal Conference in 2006.
Mr. McGlothlin is a graduate of
the College of William and Mary, a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1962 and
W&M Law Degree in 1964. He began to practice law in the firm of
Street, Street and McGlothlin in Grundy, Virginia for eight years.
Mr.
McGlothlin acquired and became President of United Coal Company in
March 1970, as a small coal contractor in surface mining, which is now
The United Company. He sold the company in 1997 and repurchased it in
2004. United Coal Company LLC is the original foundation of The United
Company and is proud of a long history of success while taking a
different approach to the coal industry. Started in 1970, United Coal
became one of the nation’s largest coal exporters in the 1990’s.
For thirty-nine years Mr. McGlothlin has been Chairman, President and CEO of The United Company. The Company has interests in coal in the central Appalachia area of the United States, principally in West Virginia, Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio and interests in exploration and production of oil and gas in the southwestern part of the U.S., principally in Texas and in the western most Provinces of Canada.
The Company owns or has owned golf courses, real estate developments, mine mill industrial support companies, pharmaceutical manufacturing businesses, electric furnace steel operations located throughout the U.S. as well as other interests in several miscellaneous companies.
In April 2009 Metinvest acquired The United Coal Company for approximately $1 billion.
In November, 2009, Mr. McGlothlin met with faculty, staff and students and speak on a variety of subjects, including employee engagement, business plans, operations and entrepreneurship.
