Accounting is a great place to start. It can be your whole career or the jumping off point for many career choices. Being able to explain balance sheets and financial statements opens doors for you in all parts of the public and private sectors. William & Mary alumni who studied accounting have gone on to excel at many things as partners, CFOs, bankers, CEOs, solo practitioners, consultants, and entrepreneurs.
Business Week confirms it in the recent article on “Best Places to Launch your Career”. You can also take a look at the article "The 95 Best Places to Launch a Career".
During your time on campus, you’ll find dozens of opportunities to explore what lies ahead. The world of business operates as much on “who you know” as “what you know.” Coming to as many campus events as you can gives you the chance to make contact with potential employers and deepens your understanding of where you best fit in.
Fall is a very busy time on campus. The Wayne F. Gibbs Society and the Career Center offer programs such as the Accounting Symposium, the Gibbs Annual Dinner, the Career Fair, and topical presentations by firms that recruit and hire W&M students. These activities will get you started on your way.
Many organizations offer externships and internships to help you learn about the job and the people who work there. Externships typically take place during winter break and can range in length from a day or two up to a week or more. Students usually obtain their externships by talking about their interests with employers who are visiting campus.
