WILLIAMSBURG, VA — CSX Professor of Business Administration Economics & Finance John Strong has been appointed to the National Academy of Sciences / Transportation Research Board Study Commission on Highway Safety.
The Transportation Research Board Study Commission will analyze international experiences in improving highway safety. In recent years, the highway safety performance has changed little in the United States while Europe and Australia have made noteworthy progress in reducing traffic injury and fatality rates. The TRB study will examine the sources of these safety improvements in other countries and recommend improvements. The mission of the TRB—one of six major divisions of the National Research Council—is to promote innovation and progress in transportation through research. Strong has previously served as a member of NAS/TRB panels on aviation security and on trucking size and weight regulation.
Strong has also been appointed Associate Editor of the Journal of Transportation Security. The mission of the journal will be to disseminate new research, thought, and analysis for teachers, researchers, policy makers and practitioners around the world who view transportation security as a critical element in the post 9/11 world. Transportation security lies at the core of many important areas of study, including supply chain and logistics; information technology; public policy; international business; political science; engineering; transportation; economics; and counterterrorism, among others. This journal will be the first to take a global, apolitical, and in-depth multidisciplinary look at the field.
Strong is internationally recognized for his research in air traffic safety. His next book, titled "Managing the Skies: Air Navigation in the 21st Century," is due later this year.
