A native Virginian, Jim Irving earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in accounting from the University of Virginia’s McIntire School of Commerce.  He received his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  Prior to graduate school, Jim worked as an auditor for one of the Big 4 professional service firms.

At the Mason School of Business, Jim is an Assistant Professor of Accounting.  His current research projects examine issues in financial reporting and disclosure as well as auditing.  For instance, his dissertation paper investigates the capital market effects associated with internal control disclosures mandated by the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002.

Jim teaches Financial Reporting & Analysis II and Principles of Accounting to undergraduate students.  He previously instructed financial accounting and managerial accounting at UVa and UNC.
